If you're seeking a meaningful way to contribute to improving Arizona's natural and built environment, we have giving opportunities to suit every interest.
As we purposefully work to expand our Planned Giving Program, Arizona Forward encourages our members and donors to consider new and forward-thinking ways of giving.
Although gifts of cash immediately sustain our mission, non-cash and deferred giving alternatives may afford donors greater tax benefits than a cash gift of equivalent value, making them ideal vehicles for charitable giving.
**The information provided below is general in nature and should not be relied on as tax, legal, or financial planning advice. For specific advice, please consult your professional advisors.
Retirement Account Assets
If you die with retirement plan assets in your estate, those assets are subject to income taxes that may dramatically reduce the amount that would otherwise pass to your beneficiaries. Instead, consider designating Arizona Forward as a beneficiary of your retirement accounts. Because we are a nonprofit organization, Arizona Forward is able to take a tax-free withdrawal of retirement assets, allowing us to use their full value to further our important work.
Life Insurance Policies
Most of us think of life insurance as protection, particularly for our loved ones. But life insurance is also a powerful charitable tool that can be used to champion our work far into the future. By designating Arizona Forward as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, you are able to create a charitable legacy without invading cash and other assets designated for your heirs.
By making a gift of appreciated securities, you may be able to avoid paying the capital gains tax that would otherwise be due at the sale of those securities, and may also receive a charitable income tax deduction at the time of the gift. Because securities enjoy favorable capital gains treatment, they often provide greater tax benefits than a cash gift of equivalent value, particularly if they have a low cost basis.
Under the right set of circumstances, a charitable trust may enhance your income, minimize taxes, unlock appreciated investments and ultimately provide Arizona Forward with a significant charitable gift. Although trusts are complex legal instruments that require professional advice and careful consideration, many donors realize optimal estate planning by establishing a charitable trust.
Gifts made through wills and trusts have become the foundation of the American philanthropic tradition. Indeed, the overwhelming majority of planned gifts are the result of bequests, commonly known as deferred or “legacy” gifts. If you have considered making a gift to Arizona Forward but are not ready to relinquish your assets today, consider leaving us a legacy gift. A simple provision in your will or trust may enable you to make significant contributions not otherwise possible during your lifetime.
Although you should carefully review the terms of your Will with an appropriate professional advisor, we are happy to provide the following Sample Bequest Language:
Sample bequest language:
“I give, devise and bequeath to Arizona Forward, 3800 North Central Avenue, Suite 1010, Phoenix, AZ 85012, the sum of $____________ (or ___ % of my estate or a description of the specific asset) for the benefit of Arizona Forward and its general purposes (or for the benefit of the association’s Fund for a Sustainable Future endowment).
In honor of its 40th anniversary in 2009, Arizona Forward (then Valley Forward) established the Fund for a Sustainable Future endowment. Gifts to this Fund work to build a permanent capital reserve, creating a financial bedrock for the organization, ensuring our success for generations to come.
Held at the Arizona Community Foundation, your gift to the Fund for a Sustainable Future endowment becomes part of the Fund’s permanent principal, where it is invested and held in perpetuity. Over time, interest earned by the Fund will be directed to Arizona Forward’s operating budget, enabling us to diversify our funding sources and thereby strengthen our financial vitality.
Arizona Forward sincerely appreciates forward-thinking donors who make charitable gifts to our organization through their Will or estate plans. These planned or deferred gifts may include retirement assets, stock, insurance proceeds or real estate, and play a significant role in securing our continued success.
By including a charitable provision in your Will or trust, or by designating a future gift of insurance or retirement plan assets, you become a tangible partner in our mission to balance economic vitality with environmental sustainability. Arizona Forward’s Legacy Society was named in honor of the late James W. Elmore, a former Chair of the Board who was known as the “Father of Rio Salado”, our signature founding project. His unwavering commitment to our cause led to creation of the Tempe Town Lake and Phoenix Rio Salado Restoration Project.
If you have already provided for Arizona Forward in your will, trust, or by beneficiary designation on life insurance or retirement accounts, you are automatically a member of the James W. Elmore Legacy Society and we are delighted to welcome you. You are encouraged to inform us of your gift so that we may celebrate it during your lifetime. Click this link to download the James W. Elmore Legacy Society Member Information Form.
Every year, Arizona Forward must raise sufficient resources to present our sustainability agenda statewide, offer the highest quality environmental events, and provide abundant engagement opportunities to our members. Although membership dues are our largest source of operating revenue, these dues cover only a portion of our actual expenses.
Annual gifts provide critically needed support to help bridge the gap.
Unrestricted contributions through our Annual Giving Program are readily available resources, allowing you to make an immediate impact on our programming.
To encourage deeper investments, Arizona Forward has established the President’s Club, recognizing supporters who make a personal commitment of $500 or more to either our Annual Giving Fund or our Fund for a Sustainable Future Endowment, found here.
As a President’s Club member, your generosity will be publicly recognized by Arizona Forward, including in our Annual Report and other publications. If you prefer to remain anonymous, we are happy to honor your wishes.
